Mindset – How others mindsets impact you.

“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”

Philippians 4:8 ESV

How many times do we sit and listen to all the negative chatter, complaining and whining of those around us in person or even on social media?

Have you ever thought about the impact of YOU personally by allowing all of the chatter into your mind?

You are hanging out with friends at a cafe’ and they are all on social media complaining and perhaps even attacking someones post or appearance. All of that goes into your ears to your mind and heart. You find yourself feeling down, depressed or lacking something. Then you walk away and feel totally worthless because you are afraid you may not meet the expectations of those same “friends.”

“Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool,
but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered.”

Proverbs 28:26 ESV

Let me share my story on this…

I was born and raised in Southern California. A place that places high values on your external appearance and the number of toys you have, NOT about who you are as a person. I was an oops baby and my mother saw me as a reminder of some bad choices in her life and a lie she was living. Both of these situations placed me in a position I was not going to win. I was told I was “stupid, fat and ugly…why aren’t you like your friends?” from my mother on a regular basis. She did this because every time she looked at me I reminded her of the lie she was living.

In High School, the kids thought it was fun to call me “Brunswick,” which if you do not know is a bowling ball.

Folks there did not take the time to get to know who Robin was inside. Don’t feel bad for me, it was an amazing time of God becoming real to me and as HE showed me my value I was able to shine in the midst of a manure pile.

So, 48 years later I move with my amazing husband to South Carolina. I found myself caught up in the mindset instilled in me by living on the West Coast, I worried about my weight, my age and Lord knows what else. Even when those I met truly just were excited to meet me and wanted to know more about me.

You see, the impact of the mindset in Southern California had told me I was not pretty enough, thin enough…just plan not enough. Then I come down south and folks are NOT judging you for your appearance, they are looking at your heart and actions!

How Refreshing and Amazing!

And yet I would secretly wonder when they were going to make fun of me or call me names or even laugh at me…that is what I knew out west.

That has NEVER happened out here!

I am now truly living in a place that understands that people are more than the outward appearance. The way God meant us to see each other! It is not about the clothes on our back, the number of toys we own or what size our pants are…it is truly about who you are as a person.

This is a process for me to release the negative mindset even today, at times I begin to freak out about going somewhere alone because of the mindset I grew up and lived in for so long.

I choose today to have people in my life and even on my social media that reflect a mindset closer to the southern thinking and I do not allow the other in…

“Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool,
but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered.”

What will you choose today for your own life?
